Younger on TV Land is my new TV show obsession. It isn’t that fantastic, especially since the protagonist, Liza, who is pretending to be 20-something looks nothing like a millennial (come on, 40 year old! You’re not fooling me!). But, after binge watching The Handsmaid Tale, I needed some lighthearted TV. Lying about your age to land a job at a publishing house is the fun that I needed – and I can definitely relate.
When I had Evan I had a tough time transitioning from freelance writer and creative to full-time employee. I wanted to and needed to as my freelance work had dried up and, honestly, I needed to get the fuck out of Dodge. (That be full-time mommyhood and my small ass apartment.) But I could not find work anywhere. As a professional writer and artist with over 10 years experience, I was either overqualified or too old to “fit in” with the newest dating trends, a content matter I have written about my entire adult life.
While facing this conundrum and feeling stuck, I realized two things: 1) it’s much more challenging finding a job when you’re a vieja, and 2) I had to switch gears. I couldn’t lie about my age like Liza (although I look younger than Liza) but I could return to education (my former career) and continue to create right here on this platform, which I have honed and grown for 8 years. So, yah, Liza and I are a lot alike; we even date younger men.
Yup. I used to be a cougar (ok…maybe a cub) like Liza is on the show. And I talk a little bit more on this episode of Love Sujeiry: Talk Served Raw. Plus, is kissing super important or can you get it on without a spectacular smooch? This and more on Love Sujeiry: Talk Served Raw! Press play, listen and subscribe!
