Soy Orgullosa! How I Inspire Latinas Through Words

Storytelling. Sujeiry does it well and hopes to inspire Latino orgullo through words.

From creating videos of our love of platanos to showing off our Dominican-styled tresses, Dominicans have a boatload of Latino pride.

I do too. Yo soy Orgullosa® de ser Dominicana. I love how my people manipulate words to create the funniest refranes. When a merengue ripao plays I’m the first on the dance floor, swinging my hips fast and furious like my African and Taino ancestors would expect and demand. (Yes, Dominicans can be demanding and strong-willed all while nursing away your cold with a plate of warm, homemade sancocho.) I am also family-oriented, warm, engaging, boisterous and passionate. I dare you to find a Dominican that isn’t.

Orgullosa logoBecause I love being Latina, I celebrate my culture daily on LoveSujeiry.com by sharing stories of my traditional Dominican upbringing in Washington Heights, Mami’s dramatic lectures (“yo no te crie asi!”) and exposing dating and relationship experiences that belong in a telenovela. I dish on sex from a Latina’s perspective with the hope that Latinas will speak up in their relationships instead of being afraid of el que diran.

My relatable, raw yet humorous words encourage Latinas to accept who they are, what they want and whom they love. My openness inspires Latinas everywhere, just like Orgullosa® – a community created in 2011 to connect and inspire Latinas to be proud of their culture. Orgullosa® has even launched a video series featuring Dascha Polanco of “Orange is the New Black,” Jeannette Kaplun, the founder, HispanaGlobal, Laura Gomez, a tech entrepreneur, and María Teresa Kumar, Presidenta and CEO of Voto Latino. The video series celebrates Latinas and how proud we should be of our culture and traditions. Watch the videos with your head held high as these lovely Latinas share how amazing it is to be Latina!

As for me, I’ve realized that just like my Dominican parents, tios, tias, primas, primos, and comrades, I inspire Latino pride through words. My voice may be loud when on the airwaves. It may even shock readers and listeners. In the end what matters is that my voice, my message, my candidness on all things inspires Latinas to think, act and live their best life. I dare you to.

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Orgullosa and Latina Bloggers Connect. The opinions and text are all mine.
