You know you’re funny when you can make a drag queen laugh. And that I did at the Get Your Drag On event at LIPPS NYC. The tall and majestic ladies surrounded me. Two at the bar. One performing on stage. Another swaying her hips as she strutted down the stairs in heels. And their hair! Their long, big manes would be the envy of any Jersey girl.
It was my first time at a drag show, and, other than watching RuPaul’s Drag Race, I never had a personal experience with a drag superstar. So I was thrilled to have the opportunity to admire them face to face in all their glory.
First, there was Beef Cake. Her barrister voice boomed as she sang a song that introduced the show.
Then, the piece of resistance – Manila Luzon. The first runner up of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 3 graced us with her presence. Her own paparazzi in tow.
I chuckled as she posed with one hand on the breast of a statue. The flash as fast as lighting as the hired paparazzi took her photo. All the while, I drank a gingerale and Stoli Vanilla while my date and giveaway winner, Larissa from The Ella Project, slurped on a frozen cosmopolitan. Whenever we needed a refill, I returned to the bar and chatted up these two lovely ladies.
Thats when it happened. In mid camera click, I made a commentary about my pepa and they both laughed. “You’re funny!” One said while handing over my drink. I thanked her and smiled, secretly proud that my humor could reach the hearts of drag queens. Because, if they think I’m funny, I can conquer the world with laughter via my lighthearted story telling. I can be the creative, professional funny gal I always thought I’d be…with or without drag.
