I often go straight to the back page of the latest Cosmopolitan to read my horoscope for my trusty zodiac sign – Sagittarius. Restless, independent, and easily adaptable to changes – this describes me to a tee. It’s always the same characterization, though. Every Sagittarius is supposed to be just like that. Not reasonable, right? So why do I have an app for horoscopes on my iPhone and follow three Twitter accounts dedicated to astrology? And I read them almost daily! Simple, really: they’re fun!
Not everyone is into horoscopes like I am. They might believe there is no solid basis that supports the information. Jen Ferguson, a 27-year-old out of Austin, Texas says, “I actually don’t pay attention to horoscopes unless someone wants to read me mine. Apparently, I’m a Capricorn though so I guess my practical nature takes over when it comes to horoscopes. Isn’t that all just kind of like subjectivity?”
Grace Baker, a sophomore in college out of North Texas, takes a more open-minded approach: “I like knowing what I can be capable of, and reading about my sign helps me see that. Apparently I’m pretty creative and self-sufficient…I’m an Aquarius.”
Horoscope and astrology also tackles romantic compatibility. As much as I read through some form of scoop about my awesome fire sign, I tend to draw the line at compatibility matches based on your classification. I’m going to be attracted to whoever I want to be attracted to. Plus, the sign you are associated with (your Sun Sign) due to your date of birth is only a small factor that describes your character. You also have your Rising Sign (aka Ascendant) – it is the first impression you leave on others, your Moon Sign – this governs your emotions, your Venus Sign – all about how you are in love, your Mercury Sign – this suggests how you communicate and reason, and your Mars Sign, which governs your sexuality.
Still, what you place value on is up to you. There’s nothing wrong with investing in an interest that isn’t exactly proven or tangible. If you find yourself identifying with your sign more than you thought, keep learning about yourself. I was surprised when I delved into it and looked at my Venus, Mercury, and Mars signs and saw a lot of similarities. I’m a proud little Sagittarius who has closer relationships – male and female – with Gemini’s and Leo’s. I’m a romantic who wears rose-colored glasses and has a desire to discover variety and passion with a partner.
All in all, it’s a good girls night activity. My friends and I enjoy reading horoscopes over a bottle of wine. Seeing how we all differ and approach situations makes us wonder how we ended up being close at all! Which one of us is the romantic? The practical one? The impulsive one? Who has the temper? Yeah, we get a good laugh out of them. So go at it with fun in mind.
