I’ve been blogging since the early age of 26. I’m 42 now, so that’s over a decade of experience tucked into my pantalones. I’ve also been fortunate enough to make a living off of blogging and, ultimately, doing what I love – that’s using the written word to teach, share, and entertain. So, yes, you can trust my advice when I tell you how to create a money making blog!
In all transparency, I hadn’t a clue what I was doing when I began blogging in 2005. What I didn’t know then I know now: to earn money as a blogger – whether you’re going at this full time or as a side hustle for residual income – you need to have a strategy, you need to choose the right niche, and you need to be consistent even when you’re only making $100 a year from Google Adsense.
Before all of this, you actually need a blog! If you stumbled upon this blog because you had the brilliant idea to become a blogger (and you’re so excited about it), you’re in the right place! There are no coincidences, girl, I got you! Without further ado, here are the steps to take to create a money making blog:
Manifest Your Money Making Blog
Before you launch your money making blog, get really clear on your purpose for blogging. Do you want to quit your full-time job and work from home as a blogger? Are you using the blog as a portfolio for your work? Will this be an online magazine with various contributors or are you building a brand for further business ventures? Are you selling products (you really should, it’s one of the main ways to create a money making blog) or creating an affiliate marketing blog? Whatever your goal is be clear and plan accordingly as it can be challenging to change direction mid stream without confusing Google search results.
Choose a A Specific Niche
What do you blog? Are you for sure? The right niche can either make or crush your blogging dreams. Make sure that your niche is broad enough to provide you with enough material to write about, but not too broad that you don’t stand out from the crowd. For example, in 2005 I started a relationship blog. Broad niche, for sure, but I differentiated it by writing personal essays about my relationships for a Latinx audience. There was a void, I pounced on it, and it launched my successful blogging career – and then some.
Your Blog Name
Take it from me, you want a blog name that is easy to spell and remember. Love Sujeiry is neither of these things, but my goal was to build a relationship brand and online platform. I managed to do just that with a complicated name. However, if your plan is only to blog and not rule the world ala JLo (yup, I chose Love Sujeiry to emulate her because she brands her products with her name successfully), choose a blog name that reflects your blog topic and niche, and that will please the Google Gods. I discuss more about this in my Blogging Basics for Newbie Bloggers course.
Check If the Name and Domain Is Available
You have to consider the availability of your blog name. Your domain and all of your social media platforms should use the same name for brand identity. If it’s not available, go back to the drawing board – and never ever use anything but a .com!
Buy Your Domain and Web Host
To run a blog on the technical side, you need a domain and a web host. A domain is the name of your blog; so, what you enter into the search bar. The web host is what runs your blog. In laments terms, your domain is your house address and your web host is the electricity that keeps the lights. on. You can buy a domain and web host at low cost/high speed (and you want speed for a blog!) on Bluehost. That is what I use to run my blog. Pssst, Bluehost also has an affiliate program where you get paid for every person you refer as a new customer. And that’s one of many ways that you can monetize your blog!
Choose a Content Management System
There are a handful of Content Management Systems to choose from, however, I always recommend Wordprress. There is a learning a curve, but once you get the hang of it it’s the best thing since slice bread. Unlike Shopify and Wix (if you have a shop page) WordPress is FREE. You can create a membership blog, sell fashion, add affiiate links, sell digital downloads, and more – ALL FOR FREE.
Buy or Install a Theme
Once you choose a CMS (WordPress, of course) you can either hire a web developer like moi or you can purchase a theme and try to design your blog yourself.
Launch, but not before an SEO strategy!
Before you launch please please please make sure you’re SEO game is strong. Again, you want the Google Gods to be thrilled with your new blog. You want Google to discover your pages and blog posts! If you’re not confident in your SEO skills, contact me and I can creat an SEO plan or an SEO audit just for your blog so that your SEO foundation is strong. If you create a strategic SEO game from the very beginning of your blogging career, you will reap the benefits – that’s a money making blog, girl!

I link these companies and their products because of their quality and not because of the commission I receive from your purchases. The decision is yours, and whether or not you decide to buy something is completely up to you.
