Did you hear? Latinos are taking over, yo! And as a fellow Latina I couldn’t be more proud of my people. We are bad asses en la cama and the board room, and we don’t play around when it comes to our family. Whether we invite 100 cousins to our wedding in the Caribbean, or we can’t help but dance a merengue while doing la compra in the supermarket, Latinos love to represent their culture.
This leads me to wonder: how do Latinas date? How do we really feel about kissing on a first date and talking versus texting? Are we any different than any other culture when courting the object of our affection offline and online? I got the scoop from Zoosk. Here are some interesting stats about Latino love trends and what men and women really feel and want from dating:
No kiss for you!
Although Latinas often greet friends and family with a peck on the cheek, we feel uncomfortable being touchy feely with a guy we just started dating. Zoosk discovered that 30 percent of women thought that kissing a man on the cheek at first meet was too forward. As for the first make out session, 54 percent of Latinas said that they don’t kiss on the first date, and are much more comfortable kissing after two or three dates. They felt that men would get the wrong idea.
I can relate. I didn’t want to kiss Boo on the first date. I liked him but I am reserved when getting to know a guy. When he went in for the kill, I quickly pecked him on the lips and turned my face. I turned into a school girl! What was missing was a cheese bus.
Shacking up is a-ok.
I recently moved in with Boo, and my mom was super supportive of my decision. Apparently, many Latino families would be as well. 60 percent of the Latinas who responded to the Zoosk survey said that their mommas and poppas would be a-ok if they shacked up with their partner before marriage. Still, traditional values run deep as 70 percent of Latinas in the survey said they have yet to live with someone they have dated.
We like to talk.
Although many people text and text and text (until their fingers fall off!) Latinas much rather pick up the phone and call somebody. 39 percent of Latinas from the Zoosk poll said that they rather coordinate first dates via phone call. Surprisingly, 53 percent of men agreed!
But wait, there is more proof that if you ask a Latino man to chat on the phone, he will. Over 60 percent of both men and women said that they rather communicate on the phone after the first date. Because you can’t get to know some one by only texting!
Now go out, date and be merry – and throw on a merengue for good measure.
