I’ve lost count of the years where I mourned Valentines Day. Adorned in morose black, I sulked in front of my television, flipping through channels while couples engaged in conversation and late night fellatio and intercourse. And forget about those bright red aisles in the Duane Reade, Rite Aids, and Walgreens of the world. One glimpse of those chocolate hearts or a stroke of the soft peluches and my eyes watered as if my pepa™ were rammed by an elephant trunk.
So what does one do when single on Valentines Day? Plenty of things; just because one is single doesn’t mean one is unloved or alone. One is a magic number, after all.
Here’s how to make your Valentines Day a love filled one, no matter what your relationship status:
- Treat Yourself: Whether you purchase a massage or facial at a spa or spend the night with B.O.B (battery operated boyfriend), find the time on Valentines Day to seduce yourself. Because no one can love you as much as you do!
- Write Love Letters: When I was single, I wrote personal emails to my loved ones on Valentines Day. In these notes, I expressed how much I appreciated their relationships and how grateful I was to have their love. This year I will continue the tradition but take it a step further by writing letters and sending my love through snail mail. Who doesn’t want to get something other than bills from the sexy letter carrier in grayish blue? Besides, making someone feel loved feels good. So write your letters and buy those stamps STAT!
- A Night with the Girls: As a child, mami would congregate with her female friends and family members to lament love and loss. Lolita would play in the background and Manischewitz wine would be sipped, all while bonding over heart break and make ups. I’m not suggesting you drown your sorrows in alcohol or that being single brings sorrow. But there is something about uniting with the women in your life that feels damn good. Whether you dance the night away or stay in to watch Sex and the City repeats, get your girls together for a wonderful night. It’s all about Pepa™ Power!
- A Partner List: A partner list consists of a list of personality and physical traits of your future partner. And by future partner I mean the one you will meet when you become clear about what you want. Write a song about him, a poem, create a chart – just do it with positive intentions and good faith. Put it away and watch Cupid work his magic.
No matter what the single ladies do on Valentines Day remember to find love in those that surround you. Be grateful for what you have and those that matter. And most of all love yourself. Because as RuPaul states, “If you don’t love yourself how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?! Can I get an Amen?!”
