In the Latino culture, if you’re a single woman over the age of 30, your familia gives you major side-eye. They either think you’re a lesbian or you’re too career focused. And shame on you for not finding a husband! Don’t you know how difficult it will be to find a man once your eggs are all dried up?!
Well, your annoying relatives may be on to something. A recent study discovered that women who wait to get married have a higher rate of divorce. Specifically, the risk of divorce starts rising again when you wed after 32 years old as opposed to between the ages of 27 to 29.
But why? Don’t we know ourselves better when we are older, therefore choose the best partners for a long and happy marriage? That’s correct; however, sociologist Nicholas Wolfinger believes that when we wait to wed in our late 30’s our pool of potential spouses narrows. We have less options and might settle for men who don’t make us happy long term.
So, it seems the sweet spot for marriage is in our mid-to late 20’s. Great! Just more added pressure! I suggest you don’t share this story with your familia.
