Get A Grip! Social Media Paranoia Affects Relationships

Are his tweets to girls innocent or not?

Social media has taken a toll on couples as many of us are secure in our relationships until social media comes into play. From Instagram to Twitter to Facebook, trust is deteriorating and drama is at an all tI’ve high. And we’re all becoming paranoid super sleuths.

21-year-old Chanel Joyles from Brooklyn, New York agrees and observes that, “Instagram and Twitter is like law school for criminal work.” In other words, women are top attorneys, digging through dirt and our boo’s web history. “That’s not a good way to live,” Joyles continues.

Many women have reverted to “twatching” or “twitter watching” their boyfriend’s pages, and it’s driving them completely insane. Not only do some women read too deeply into their man’s timeline, they also calculate how many sexy Instagram pictures their beau has double-tapped. This can cause mental agony, especially if your significant other does not take social media as seriously as you do. It may all be innocent fun!

Social media paranoia is especially affecting millennial couples as they face more drama and trust issues due to new apps and a increase in technology usage. Relationships will always have ups and downs, but social media adds more fuel to an already simmering fire. Instead of talking things out like the good old days, we jump to conclusions and react badly.

Joyles agrees and believes “social media is one of the biggest reasons why a lot of us will end up alone. Our parents and grandparents’ generations didn’t have such distractions, making it easier for them to focus solely on each other.”

Dominique Alexis, a 21-year-old from Long Island, New York, sees things differently. She feels that social media usage should be taken with a grain of salt. When she sees her boyfriend like another woman’s Instagram post she initially thinks to herself, “Who is this girl? Why does he keep liking her pictures consecutively?” but soon snaps out of it and remembers that it’s just Instagram. “I shouldn’t take it that seriously.”

And that may be the best approach. Men usually don’t delve as deeply into social media as women do. If you still can’t deal, just remember that Instagram was made to like pictures and Twitter was made for quick conversations.

Being active on social media doesn’t equate to cheating.

Half of the time, we will never even come in contact with those we see on social media. We will rarely meet them IRL. So don’t let paranoia take hold. However, if your boo is deliberately ignoring your texts while simultaneously tweeting, then there’s a problem. If he’s only occasionally leaving comments on someone else’s page, put away your Inspector Gadget goggles and don’t sweat   it.
