Women have to cope with so much pressure. Regarding body image, there are so many stigmas and expectations placed upon us that we never asked for. One magazine will say we’re not good enough. Another media outlet will say we’re not pretty enough. Just when we think we feel good in our own skin, we’re told we’re supposed to be curvy and skinny, blonde and brunette…and the confusing contradictions go on and on.
Well, here’s one more thing to add to that list. Apparently, if we look too feminine men won’t keep us around for long.
A new study from the British Journal of Psychology reported that men prefer women who are more “masculine” looking for long-term relationships. They took 75 heterosexual male volunteers and had them sift through photographs of women. The photos were beauty shots – those that only show the face up close. Instantly, most men were attracted to women with more “feminine” features. However, when asked to select the face of the women with whom they’d have a long-term and/or short-term relationship, men preferred “feminine” faces for a short-term relationship and more “masculine” faces for long term. This was especially true for men who were in relationships at the time of the study.
Why the bias? Some researches say that men who want long-term relationships weigh a woman’s behavior and personality much more heavily than looks. But they don’t know these women and their personality?! You may be screaming. I know! Still, the results suggest that men just want more feminine-looking women for fun.
So, ladies, it seems we just can’t win! Or we can just be who we are and say “suck it” to this study, the media and anyone else who doesn’t realize that we are beautiful just the way we are.
