When I was single, I ran amuck, dating men who weren’t worth my time and obsessing over my ‘ideal’ love match. In the midst of my twenty-something angst, I also thought I was alone. No one can understand my longing for romance and love, I thought. Few people believe in working hard to keep a relationship sexy and functioning, I assumed. Healthy, romantic, committed love doesn’t even exist! I’d proclaim dramatically.
Well, I was dead wrong.
Match.com just conducted a study about Singles in America with Dr. Helen Fisher, an anthropologist and expert in human attraction. The findings were interesting, surprising, and refreshing. The statistics on marriage alone give me hope!
- 80% of married couples say they’d marry the same person they married.
This means marriage isn’t as miserable as people claim! Phew!
- Over two thirds of singles in their twenties and thirties want to get married.
So, you see, people do want commitment in this day and age.
- 90% of singles want to get married and are optimistic about marriage. They think they can stay married forever.
And that’s romanticism at its best.
Speaking of romance, the Singles in America study also revealed that men are more romantic than women! This got me thinking: why didn’t the men in my life express their romanticism more? Maybe it’s because I beat them to the punch. Maybe we need to give men the time to show us their sensitive side. That’s one of the many things that I’m learning to do in my current relationship. Let men be romantic instead of jumping in and doing it for them!
As for what men and women desire, 90% want someone who respects them, who they can trust, and who makes them laugh. I believe this number is high because these are qualities that are essential for a long-lasting relationship with a healthy foundation. As we learned earlier, most singles want a serious commitment.
But what about attraction? I was thrown by the following:
- 40% of singles have fallen in love with someone they didn’t initially find attractive.
They’re much more mature than I am and less shallow. I need a man who’s so hot that I cannot wait to tear off his clothes.
Nonetheless, this study proved one thing – we are never alone in our pursuit of love. And that information is always welcomed.
