The social norm has always been for men to date younger women. Then there was a shift. We’ve see couples like Ashton Kutcher (34) and Demi Moore (49), Mariah Carey (42) and Nick Cannon (31), and Madonna (54) and Brahim Zaibat (25) out and about, and even marry. What made this shift in preferences occur? Why are men into cougars?
I wanted to get to the bottom of this and discover what makes older women more appealing to younger men. So I interviewed a man dating a woman 24 years his senior:
Q: How old are you in comparison to your girlfriend?
A: I’m 21 and she’s 45.
Q: How did you two meet and what made you so attracted to her?
A: Well, she was going to my gym and I honestly didn’t acknowledge her age. I just thought she was really hot. She was the one that came up to me and asked me out, and then one thing led to another.
Q: When she did bring up her age, didn’t you think it was weird that she was essentially the same age as your mother?
A: No, I don’t see it that way at all. Age is just a number; it doesn’t really mean anything. It’s not like I’m dating my mother.
Q: What makes older women more attractive than younger women?
A: It’s not that younger women are unattractive. I mean, they can be very beautiful but so are older women. The main issue I have with younger women is that they don’t have much direction in life. They’re still shy about most things and they’re kind of clueless as to how things in the real world work. Older women know what it is that they want. They aren’t afraid to try anything because they have experience. Younger women are still trying to figure themselves out. Also, older women are more independent. They don’t need you to call them every five minutes, like some 20 year olds do.
Q: So, you like older women because of their maturity and independence?
A: Partly yes. Older women have more to offer me. They also really teach me things. I feel like I benefit a lot more form dating older women then I would with a younger girl.
Q: If you were to find a younger woman, maybe a woman your age, with all these qualities, would you date her over an older woman?
A: Hmm. Maybe. But like I said it’s more than just that. It’s how you feel. Like I know in my heart that I’m in love, and regardless of her age, love is love. No number will change that. It’s about the person not the number.
