As women, bringing a significant other home to meet the parents can freak us out just as much as it does men. We worry about family approving. We worry about our significant other’s behavior.
I introduced my current boyfriend to my father five months into our relationship. My boyfriend expected my Salvadorian father to be really scary and strict, qualities my father actually does posses. Thankfully, my man is over six-feet-tall so this made my tiny, five-foot-five father seem less intimidating. Still, that did not stop my father, a former cop in El Salvador, from giving my man the third degree.
“Where do you work?” He asked. “Do you smoke?” Papi barked. “Do you have kids?” He interrogated. And the infamous “What are your intentions with my daughter?!”
Fortunately, my boyfriend held his ground with ease and passed the test.
Guys are not the only ones who have to deal with the pressure of impressing parents. Every time I met a boyfriend’s parents, I was also nervous! I wear my emotions on my sleeve so you could see the discomfort on my face. My foot would not stop shaking and I have a bad habit of looking down at my fingers as I continuously play with them. I didn’t want to make a bad impression.
