My good friend Ricky used to call me a prude. The sound of his mocking laugh haunted me for days after I told him I hadn’t had sex in 10 months.
“Next time,” I began, “I want to be in a committed relationship.”
He rolled his eyes and began to preach about all the fun I was missing. Much like a television Evangelist, Ricky hoped to bring me to the other side. He wished to lure me into the promiscuous world he respected, loved, and lived. He desired to rid me of my Catholic guilt so I could go buckwild.
Mami, on the other hand, is Ricky’s opposite. ‘Prude’ is a blessed word in her limited English vocabulary. And though she simply ground her teeth when I told her I wasn’t a virgin anymore, I know she secretly wished I had waited until marriage. If Mami knew the exact number of men I've slept with, she would think I was a bonafide slut. Mami would cry out in shame while making the sign of the cross. She’d blame herself and wonder where she went wrong as a mother. Through sobs, she would recite one of her infamous euphemisms, “Yo no te crie así!”
Grab a cup of café and meet me in class!
"Sujeiry brings you in from the first page, to both laugh and cry in her realistic portrayal of dating in the new millennium."
In 2005 aka The Wild Wild West of Blogging, Elijah broke my heart into smithereens. To heal and share my story, I launched my relationship blog, posting one “I’m so lonely” story every Wednesday. At the time, I studied writing at Rowan University and hadn’t a clue what awaited of my writing career after graduate school. I had big dreams of becoming a published author. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that my blog would catapult me into the limelight.
With an MA in hand and back in NYC, I continue to write about my relationship stumbles. A fan of my work coined me the "Latina Carrie Bradshaw" and I loved it and ran with it. For years, I wrote about love, sex and dating on my own relationship blog and for various platforms, including Latina Magazine, Hip Latina, Cosmopolitan, Babble, Mamiverse, NBC Latino, Madamenoire, and many more. Then I caught the limelight bug and thanks to my brandtastic content and strategy, I made the following happen: .
2009: I self-published Love Trips.
2013: I landed a weekly guest radio spot on The Raq-C and Nachin Show in FM radio in Los Angeles.
2014: I became Latina.com's love and sex expert and hosted my own web series, Ask Sujeiry, where I dished on love and sex and interviewed Patti Stanger from Bravo's The Millionaire Matchmaker.
2015: I hosted my own radio show on SiriusXM.
2018: I played myself on VH1’s Beauty Bar.
2020: I was featured on People.com and Cosmopolitan as a relationship expert. See my full press page here.
Now, I am writing my first romance novel and sharing my first book, Love Trips, with the masses again. And to think it all started with choosing the wrong man.
