Is Beyonce’s Haircut A Big Deal Because She’s Black?

Beyonce haircut is all the rage. Is it because she’s Beyonce or because she’s African American? Twitter reactions and some talk about “pelo malo” and “pelo bueno.”

In the Latino and African American community, long hair and “good hair” matters.

Beyonce cut her hair and it’s all the rage. Even prestigious media outlets like Time Magazine and CNN are blogging about her haircut as if it were a threat to national security. So, what’s the big deal anyway? Is it just because it’s Beyonce? Or is it because she’s an African American woman who chose to chop off her long locks?

Something many women of color would never dream of doing. Because long hair is a commodity. It is purchased and sown in and clipped in. We buy Dominican products to grow our tresses, life the infamous Crece Pelo (Grow Hair) and Dominican Magic.

In the Latino culture, among many others, long tresses are equated to beauty. Straight hair is “pelo bueno” (good hair) and anything other than that is called “pelo malo” (bad hair). My natural curls are labeled unruly and wild, as if I need to be tamed.

This is why I believe Beyonce’s hair is a trending topic on Twitter and garnering so much coverage. Why do you think it is? Here are some tweets with some of your thoughts.
