I wanted to tell you how much I love your work. You are such an inspiration to me! My mom has been telling me for so long that I have got a knack for writing but I’ve never actually pursued a career like going to school for it or anything. I just kinda write for fun. I suppose being 21 isn’t too late to pursue my goals.
Where can I start? I saw some freelance writing jobs on the Internet but I don’t know if they are legit. What are your thoughts? What do you think?
Becoming a Writer
Dear Becoming a Writer,
The first step I’d suggest is to put your work out there (ie. starting a blog). However, it’s not just about writing a blog but being disciplined enough with your writing, which is why my second suggestion is to write on a consistent basis. That helps accustom you to deadlines which is important. Being professional helps build a great reputation which, in turn, helps you build connections. Thirdly, find your writing genre/niche. That way your content is somewhat thematic and you can target your audience much more effectively.
That’s how I began my writing career. I decided to write about my relationships and dating disasters every Wednesday. I send an email blast with the blog link to all my friends (FB wasnt even around then!) and received great feedback and, eventually, built a loyal fan base that extended past my circle of friends. Not even a year later, I was picked up to write Love Trips by migente.com and then went on to many other ventures.
So just begin writing! Pick a topic you’re passionate about and become an expert on that theme or genre. Then you will receive feedback and, hopefully, build a following. Eventually, you can decide if you want to write for publications and websites and begin your search.
Love strongly and wisely,
