Zoe Saldana Advices Women to Feel Beautiful in Their Skin
I didn’t always feel beautiful in my own skin. Like Zoe Saldana, who states in her interview with Women’s Health that she was once “really slender” and “sometimes looked a little too flat-chested,” I too didn’t fit the vavavoom Latina stereotype.
At 18, I was only 98 pounds. I went to a nutritionist to help me gain weight. My bra was an A cup and always padded. My curves? Nonexistent.
So I can relate to Saldana when she said this to the magazine:
“I do look in the mirror and see things I don’t want.”
But the proud Dominican also encourages us to accept ourselves as is. And not obsess over working out or trying to be perfect. She continues:
“I do feel beautiful in a way that even when I was working out a whole lot, I sometimes didn’t.”
“…you’ll never be completely happy, so at the end of the day it’s like, ‘Fuck it. Just be happy, regardless.”
Fuck it. Just be happy regardless.
I love her brutal honesty. That’s what I realized after years of nitpicking at my body and trying to change what my momma and God gave me. I threw away the padded bras. I stopped chugging Ensures. I rocked clothes that worked for my smaller frame. I became self-first.
And now I feel beautiful.
