The Menhattan Project Book Review: Sex, Men, and More Sex

By  |

You turn to the first page of a book and hope to be titillated instantly. If not, you may not want to read any further. In this day and age, where instant gratification rules all, a book has to grab us. It’s a hard knock life for an author, but not for Victoria Flores, author of The Menhattan Project.

The Menhattan Project begins with a sex scene. The protagonist, Vivian Fiori, is receiving cunnilingus from a hunky model that she met at a bar just the night before. One night stands are the norm in The Menhattan Project, as is marrying for money and status. It’s Manhattan, after all. But there is more to to this book than sex. (Although there is a lot of sex.) The story of a woman who is obsessed with physical appearance, dieting, and men may seem vain, but the book promotes female empowerment, as Viv and her friends have unabashed sexual experiences. No finger wagging here, which is needed. There are plenty of people who look down on women who are sexually free and do whomever they please without apology.

The Menhattan Project also cares about friendship. Much like Carrie and the girls in “Sex and the City,” Viv is all about her girls and female bonding. The book promotes empowerment and how we as women can and should come together to support one another. And to bash men.

Yes, bashing men is a major element of this fictional book. (Though the fact that the author and main character’s initials are the exact same – VF – didn’t fool me.) But the male bashing is just for fun. And for Viv’s blog. Whether you’ve dated a Bridge and Tunnel guy or a Smoke and Mirrors dud, Viv is into it and wants your story for her blog: you guessed it, “The Menhattan Project.”

So, is the book worth a read? For sure. It is light, entertaining, and sexy. Plus, the clever terms for men that Flores came up with are contagious. Something tells me women may adopt these secret names, if they haven’t already.

Go pick up The Menhattan Project. Take my word for it. Cause I’m all about gratification.
