Agozar Cuban Restaurant: A NYC Spot for a Girls Night Out
With bright walls, old-school salsa and patriotic art displays, Agozar seemed like the perfect place to hold my friend’s birthday party. We called the Friday before and they were more than willing to accommodate a reservation for 10 for the following Saturday night. But with a credit card number.
Like most Latinas, we were fashionably late, so we were grateful that they held our table for 15 minutes. Once seated, we admired the paintings on the bright red and orange walls. The portrayals of farmers and street vendors allowed us to appreciate the Cuban culture and hope for authentic food. The ambience melded well with the Celia Cruz classics that played in the background.
Soon, it was time for drinks. Agozar offers a plethora of mojitos. The menu is divided between passion fruit mojitos and sangria. Having tried the sangria, it is one of the best I’ve tasted, and I’ve tried A LOT of sangria. As for the other ladies, they adored the potency of the mojito, but with just a whiff I knew the drink lacked passion fruit.
Our appetizers arrived within reasonable time. We chowed down on mariquitas, wings, and yucca fries. However, the appetizer portions were so small it was difficult to share. Luckily, some entrées arrived. The rice and beans were good. Three people ordered the skirt steak, and they truly enjoyed their meal. The steak was tender and juicy, as it should be.
After the meal, we talked, laughed, and took a million selfies. Not once did the staff try to rush us out. They were very patient with us and kept the drinks flowing as we requested. They even catered to two friends who came extremely late, giving them menus and taking their orders.
Overall, we had a good time because we were together, enjoying the precious moments of a much-needed birthday party/girl’s night out.
