As a young chiquilla I’d stare at Mami while she put on her face. Propped on her queen-sized bed, I’d watch her massage her cheeks upward, dab on concealer under her eyes and apply a clear liquid all over her tawny skin with a cotton ball. And I’d ask questions.
“Que es eso, Mami?”
“Toner…limpia tus poros profundamente,” she responded. Mami then showed me the cotton ball she had just used; it was covered in dirt. I was instantly amazed at how toner deep-cleansed her freshly-washed skin.
Fast forward 30 some odd years and I’ve added toner to my skin care regimen. I didn’t begin this process as young as recommended (early 20’s, say skin health professionals) but it’s never too late. Whether you’ve just begun using toner or you’ve been a skincare fanatic for years, here’s a breakdown of my fave toners and their benefits:
Clinique Clarifying Toner
That toner Mami always slathered on her face? It’s Clinique. She’s used the Clinique 3-step cleansing system for decades so, naturally, this was the first product I tried. I have to say, it cleanses like no other toner I’ve ever used. However, though it’s hypoallergenic my skin is ultra sensitive, and I found it a little harsh for my face. If your skin isn’t as complicated as mine, give Clinique’s Clarifying Toner a try. (Price of toner: $14.50 – 29.50; 6.4 fl oz or 13.5 fl oz)
Palmetto Derma’s Get Glowing! Rose Refresher Toner
I was dubious that any toner would give me that JLo glow…especially after having Evan. Let’s just say having a baby killed the brightness in my skin. After months of being inducted into #TeamNoSleep (and I’m still a member) I tried Palmetto Derma’s Get Glowing! Rose Refresher Toner. Weeks later I noticed my skin looked fresher than ever. It glowed as if I had just come back from a vacation in Miami. Sunkissed, baby! Plus, since it’s vegan (and cruelty-free) it’s perfect for my uber sensitive skin. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to reestablish a skincare regimen since becoming a momma. I know if I did, Palmetto Derma’s toner would give me permanent radiating skin. (Price: $32; 4 fl oz)
Rodan + Fields REDEFINE Pore Minimizing Toner
I am a Rodan + Fields connector; however, I’m not hawking the Rodan + Fields REDEFINE Pore Minimizing Toner because of it. This is just a great toner. It cleans thoroughly without drying out my skin and my skin also feels super fresh. This has been my go-to cleanser since I started taking care of my skin, and I follow it up with the other products from the Rodan + Fields REDEFINE line. (Price of toner: $48)
So there you have it – my recommended toners. No matter which you choose your face will appear as fine as Mami’s. And soon (like, when Evan is 18), mine.
