Catcalls. Piropos. Street harassment. Whatever you call it this woman endured it.
It happens to most women that I know, myself included. And though many women in NYC are used to the constant catcalls (or piropos, as some Latinos call it) it doesn’t make it right or comfortable.
A man using “sweeter” words like sweetie, baby, mami, or uttering the infamous, “God bless you” doesn’t make the experience less uncomfortable and frustrating for women. Their words may not be aggressive but it is still street harassment. Because it’s not about what they say; it’s about an assumption that women should take this attention. That when I am minding my business, walking down the streets of NYC, I want the attention.
But too bad. I should take it because I’m a woman. I have an ass and breasts and a vagina therefore it is a man’s right to talk to me, kick it to me, follow me, all day.
