I grew up on Welfare. Many people who know me now wouldn’t imagine that my upbringing was that tough. But it was.
Mami did her best. After migrating from the Dominican Republic to NYC, she had her children, and raised me, my eldest sister, and my younger brother the best that she could with limited resources. Papi was in and out of our lives. So Mami took on the burden and fed her family on a factory worker’s salary. And that’s why I grew up on Welfare.
I’m not ashamed of my upbringing. I’m not afraid to say that without government aid and my mother’s sacrifices I would have been very hungry as a child. My experience only propels me forward. I want a better life for my future children. I want to do what I can to help eradicate hunger today.
That’s why I’ve teamed up with Walmart (#ad) on their Fight Hunger Spark Change (#WeSparkChange) campaign. Walmart is collaborating with six key vendors (Unilever, General Mills, ConAgra, Campbell’s, Kellogg’s, Kraft) to provide 75 million meals to Feeding America Food Banks nationwide. How it works is simple:
1. From April 6th to May 3rd, you purchase a “Hunger” participating item at Walmart.
2. The item is scanned at the cash register and it is logged in as one meal that will help pay for food, electricity, gas, transportation, etc.
3. You can also register and give ($1, $2, $5 or other donations) on Walmart’s Fight Hunger page.
4. You can also share on social media to give! Share one time and that equals one “meal.”
I personally had my #Shop2Give moment when I went to Walmart and purchased a box of Pop-Tarts. My favorite as a child were the Frosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon, so I went with what I knew! All in all, this is an amazing campaign to fight hunger in America, distribute food efficiently to those in need, and engage the United States in the fight against hunger. With over 12 million children and 7 million seniors served, Fighting America is a great organization to support.
What are you waiting for? Go to Walmart’s Fight Hunger page to participate and watch how many people are giving in real time. Let it inspire you to join the movement and lend a helping hand to a child in need, just like I once was.
DISCLAIMER: Walmart is not responsible for donating the meals, the supplier partners listed above are responsible for that. #ad
