A Lesson from the Almost Latina Magazine Advice Columnist
This has been my lesson in life. Nothing in my life has come without stumbles. I haven’t always known what I wanted, who I was or even what I needed to do to get where I am today. But I never gave in. I tried. Hustled. Remained proactive.
Case in point: my new position with Loop21 as an advice columnist and Senior Producer of Relationship Content. Before I accepted this job, I was up for the job as relationship and love expert for Latina Magazine. It was my “dream” job. I worked for Latina as a dating blogger from 2009-2010. Just this year (March 2013) I was featured in Latina Magazine as a relationship expert. I thought I had it in the bag! This job is mine! It is meant for me, I assured myself. But I didn’t get it.
I cried. For a full day, I was down on myself. It was a Pitty Party for una. The following day I picked myself up and applied for more gigs. I send media kits and pitched myself like my rent depended on it, like I had 10 kids to feed, but with all the confidence in the world, knowing my worth and that I am damn good at what I do. Aaaaall of this talent is worth mucho dinero and respect!
Two weeks later I started at Loop21. A month later, I was offered a regular relationship contributor job at Babble.
And just yesterday I submitted my three pieces to Vista Magazine.
So, you see, I was meant to be where I am. I picked myself up, tried, hustled and remained proactive in the face of confusion and disappointment. Whenever you are in this position, remember this story. Where you are now and how successful you become depends on you and your willingness and your confidence. Keep trying. Keep hustling. Be proactive no matter what comes your way.
