The holidays can be a lonely time for many. Singles wish they had lips to kiss under the mistletoe, if only to shut the mouths of abuelitas everywhere as they holler, “When are you getting married?!” Those that are attached can also struggle when Santa’s “Ho ho ho!” comes to town. It may be because of an actual ho or just the pressure of gift shopping, spending, and visiting in-laws, but misery often accompanies the holiday spirit.
So, how can we find the love this holiday season? How can we replace the black coals in our hearts with bows and fancy wrapping paper? Here are a few ideas:
- Make a list of all the ways you’ve been nice. Thank yourself by doing something nice for yourself.
- Make another list. This time you will write down names of those who have brought you joy in 2012. Treat them with a token of appreciation. This can be a simple “thank you” text, card, or hug.
- Coquito (aka eggnog) is a lonely gals best friend! So, why not share the wealth with your girlfriends and closest family members? Make a batch and enjoy each others company.
- Holiday music often lifts spirits. If you’re not into ” Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire,” check out holiday albums from your favorite artists.
Lastly, no matter where you are in life or how you feel, remember things can always be worse. You could be making out with your abuelita under the mistletoe. Her yelling, “Old maid!” doesn’t seem so bad now, does it?
