Ask Sujeiry: Should I Hide My Boyfriend From My Parents?

By  |

Dear Sujeiry,

I have been with my boyfriend for two and a half years but I have yet to tell my parents about it because of there disapproving nature. He is an amazing guy but I cant get myself to talk to my parents about him since they are so strict. Any advice?

Sincerely,

Hiding My Boyfriend

Dear Hiding My Boyfriend,

My first thought when I read your question was – how old are you? I ask this because no matter how strict your parents a grown adult women wouldn’t hide her boyfriend. But maybe your situation is more challenging. Are you afraid of your parents disowning you? Does your boyfriend have a shady past or present? Does he treat you badly? Are your parents abusive?

If the answer to these questions is no, hiding your boyfriend makes no sense. It’s been two and a half years! Now, if it’s a yes, you have trouble ahead.

Regardless, you cannot continue to hide your boyfriend. That doesn’t make for a healthy relationship. And it probably doesn’t make him feel good about himself or your relationship. How terrible would you feel if after two and a half years his parents didn’t know you existed? Ouch. So, if you’re not in danger, speak up. If you’re just scared of your parents because they are your parents (trust me, I get it. My mom is no joke!) I say WOMAN UP! Tell your parents about your love, especially if there is a future with him. It’s your life and a little yelling from Mami and Papi shouldn’t stop you from living it.

Love strongly and wisely,

Sujeiry
