Soul Mates Aren’t Real, Says David Essel

By  |

I first heard of soul mates while reading a fairy tale. I don’t remember which one exactly, but there was a damsel in distress and a handsome prince determined to save her from evil. So..all of them. And I believed in soul mates. I imagined there was just one man out in the Universe made just for me and only me. He would complete me. He would rescue me from Washington Heights. He would be my prince – only less blonde and more Dominican with a love of platanos.

I continued to believe in soul mates way after I stopped reading fairy tales. Even Charlotte’s take on soul mates on Sex and the City couldn’t convince me otherwise.

Soul mates were not a sham. I mean, Mr. Big was her soul mate, dammit! Then I spoke with my friend, Vicky, a social worker with a heart of gold and an openness to all things love and sex. Of course, Vicky had a different take: we have more than one soul mate.

I was baffled by her defiance of “one true love-ness.” Fairy tales wouldn’t lie, would they? My one true love, my soul mate, my Latin prince (not Romeo Santos) would romance me during a bachata, wouldn’t he? Ummm…no. Vicky along with David Essel, coach and author of Positive Thinking Will Never Change Your Life, But This Book Will, convinced me of that. And I chat with David about the myth of soul mates and how positive thinking really doesn’t work (thoughts don’t become things?!) on this week’s Love Sujeiry podcast. So, if you think you’re going to will a soul mate to your front door with a  vision board, you’ll have better luck finding a Dominican that doesn’t eat platanos.
