As a maid of honor, I have one duty. To keep the bride sane during the wedding planning process. Brides can get a bit out of control when it comes to wedding details. From saying yes to the dress to the decor of the venue, you, future maid of honor, are in for many sleepless nights.
Take my sister, for example. She will be married in May of 2012 and is obsessed with creating her dream wedding. It makes sense. All women want their day to be the day they’ve dreamed of since childhood. Some women prefer a simple and low key celebration, while others prefer drama, sparkles, and more drama! My sister is a little in between.
Her latest obsession, which has now become my maid of honor obsession, is DIY projects. That is Do It Yourself, as in I will be up till 3am pre-wedding night with a glue gun and pain brush. Still, creating pieces may be worth inhaling the hot melt adhesives. It just so happens to be a more affordable (though not necessarily less stressful) way to build a dream wedding.
Below are a few of the latest Do It Yourself wedding trends:
Do It Yourself Flowers
If a man at a club has ever given you a rose made of napkins, then you know how easy it is to create a bouquet of faux flowers! Brides and bridesmaids are taking a little chiffon and tulle to make these lovely hair accessories. It is a pretty sight!
Do It Yourself Wedding Invitation Logo
Creating your own wedding invitations is all the rage. It also gives the invitations a lovely touch as you can add a personal logo. My sister is doing just that. She made the perfect logo that represents her and her fiance. All she needed was the Photoshop Gods, some imagination, and an abundance of love to create her invitations and save the dates.
Do It Yourself Candle Wrappers
Martha Stewart knows best and she recommends creating your very own candle wrapper! The designs can vary and should go with your wedding theme. You can use templates found online or you can wrap ribbon around the candle as well. It’s all up to you!
Do It Yourself Wedding Favors
Choosing wedding favors is usually a challenge. Some brides want to give a practical gift while others want to give something sweet and memorable. Well, here are a two ways to get both! Option 1: a fortune cookie favor. The goodie in this cute little box will not only be yummy but also indicative of what’s to come for each guest. Option 2: bookmark favors. These are truly functional and truly inspiring! Hopefully, there’s a reader in each guest. And finally, there is Option 3: packs of seeds. You can add a catchy phrase to the pack like, “Love Blooms.” When the seeds become flowers, your guests will remember your wedding and celebrate your love and the love in their lives.
With a team of bridesmaids, all of the ideas are easy to create. Just make sure to give yourself enough time to sew, glue, and stuff. The less drama at your wedding the better!
