Dating websites. To me, they are nothing but an overload of words and selfies. Online dating only seems to dwindle down prospects. It doesn’t guarantee you will find a match. Sure, these sites help busy singles. Some singles can’t paint the town red and meet new people the old fashioned way. But those who date online don’t always meet their husband or wife.
A Northwestern University study claims that dating websites hinder the user instead of helping them connect with a match. You don’t get to know a person by reading a user profile. All you get is profile summaries, photos, and corny profile names (LoveYouForeverMore, anyone?). You can be excited by your options but there’s no guarantee. Also, according to Eli Finkel, an associate professor of psychology at Northwestern University, too many options can make us listless. Comparing online dating to “shopping at “supermarkets of love,” he says that having too many choices leads to poor decisions.
So, it seems meeting someone on a traditional, online dating site isn’t much different than meeting someone at a bar. At least when you meet someone at a bar you get to know them over a beer. And before exchanging a dozen email messages.
