When you budget wisely with your honey, your relationship is that much richer.
I was raised in the United States by a macho and driven Latino father. His ways were confusing for me as a woman and my role in relationships when it came to money.
“You need a man to take care of you,” he’d preach.
In the next breath, he’d say, “You need to be able to take care of yourself.”
My mother, however, taught me to be independent in relationships while still comprising. She wanted me to make my own money and work with a partner in all aspects of a relationship. Unfortunately, that isn’t always easy. Like I did, other women receive mixed messages regarding financial management and freedom. That’s why some women are gold diggers while others focus on making money for themselves.

So, how can we be financially responsible when in a relationship? How do we handle money with our boo? Here are some tips to help you budget wisely with your man while still enjoying your relationship.
1. Every penny counts. It might be old school and cheesy but investing in a joint piggy bank will help you save as a couple. You can choose how much to put in and how often, or just throw in spare change. You’ll be surprised how much money you save as a coupe for that awesome vacation.
2. Go halfsies. When you’re in a committed relationship, there’s nothing wrong with going Dutch. The courting stage is over. He really doesn’t have to pay for everything. Going halfsies will help you compromise and you can do more together. Unless your boo is ballin,’ don’t push him to always pay your way.
3. Plan ahead. If you’re planning a couples getaway or a sexy staycation, you must plan ahead. A day at the museum followed by dinner and drinks can get expensive, especially if you reside in New York City or Los Angeles. So, set a date and get organized. Buy a calendar for each to pencil in date nights, anniversaries, and vacations. That way you know what’s coming and can divide expenses.
