I’ve never been a fan of fairy tales. Princes, princesses, dungeons, and castles: it all feels so traditional and conventional. Even as a little girl, I disliked fairy tale classics. If I were Cinderella, I’d whack my evil step-sisters with the broom stick. And I definitely wouldn’t kiss a frog in hopes that true love would transform him into a hot stud.
But, I have kissed many frogs. Men who had potential but just weren’t ready. Men who played with my tender heart albeit unintentionally. Bad boys who filled the shoes of “boyfriend” temporarily and subconsciously reminded me of my father. Men who broke my heart.
I devoured these frogs with my tongue. Embraced them and kissed them and held on because, at some point, I thought he, or him, or that toad was ‘The One.’ And, apparently, so have most women.
According to a study, the average woman will kiss 15 men and have her heartbroken twice before she meets ‘The One.’ The study also found that a woman will experience four terrible dates and be stood up at least once before settling down with her Prince Charming. One last stat: she will have fallen in love at least twice.
Kissing 15 men sounds about right. But I was a Kissing Slut in college, so I’m not sure if it counts. (I was a virgin and had to get some action!) I have only been stood up once, but that’s when I lived in La La Land. Many women in LA tell me that men stand women up often. As for experiencing four terrible dates, it depends on what constitutes a terrible date. For me, a disastrous date can occur just because there is no chemistry or physical attraction. I mean, thats the bulk of first dates when online dating. Lastly, I have only been in love once before. Does that mean that my current boyfriend isn’t ‘The One’? I don’t think so. I think he may just be it.
So, take this study with a grain of salt, or in the case of fairy tales, with a strand of hay. I’m not Cinderella. You are not Snow White. And we don’t need to save any frogs.
