Do Opposites Really Attract? And How to Make It Work

If you and your man are opposites, there may have been an instant attraction. But will it work?

If you’re anything like me, you get sucked into the mystery of the unknown. None rings more true than when I’m attracted to a member of the opposite sex. The more unlike me you are, the more attracted I am because I get to learn all of these new and interesting things about you.

I believe for anything to progressively develop between two people there needs to be enough differences so that you have plenty to talk about. Not everyone sees it the way I do. Many people tend to choose a partner from similar educational and socio-economic backgrounds. But is that the best mate for you or do opposites really attract?

Long-Term Compatibility

Some research shows that when looking to settle down with your life partner people “understand that long-term compatibility is more likely with someone who is like themselves.” Concepts like beliefs, norms, and values rank high in importance. This way there is little doubt about your future after you have made a life together.

Why Opposites Don’t Always Work

Opposites actually can and do attract, but they don’t always work. According to Dr. Phil, the issue is whether differing couples can make it last. Sure the relationship will be full of fireworks and passion, but that’s not enough. You have strive to “have a spirit of acceptance.” You have to be mature and have endurance to embrace the differences while finding compromises and making sacrifices.

Keep Working On It

So a relationship where you and your man are like night and day isn’t doomed. A successful relationship includes differences, especially what makes you unique. You don’t want to be with your clone! Don’t rebuff a relationship just because you and your partner don’t have much in common. Focus on who they are as a person and whether they are willing to keep working for you and the relationship despite some alternative views.
