My relationship with my first love was on-again/off-again. It was mostly on again because I couldn’t let go. And he played along. He would open the door to breakup sex and promise me a reunion in the near future. I believed him and soon we were on again.
This was our pattern, my pattern. I had been there before – giving a man a second chance even when the relationship was lying on the floor outlined by chalk. And I wondered, should I have given him a second shot? Should we give men the benefit of the doubt?
Here are three ways to know you if should make up, or give him another opportunity to prove himself.
He made an innocent mistake. This can be anything from him forgetting to call you like he said he would, or giving you a terrible gift for your birthday. If he didn’t intend to hurt you and has good intentions over all, give him a second shot!
The culprit is miscommunication. This happens to all of us, and it makes sense. When we are in a relationship, we are our own individual person as is our partner. We communicate the best way we know how, and sometimes it causes conflict and confusion. What matters is that he is communicating. You can work on effective communication once you make up.
He needed some time. I am usually not an advocate of this, especially because the waiting game can be so cruel. But sometimes you need to be apart for a bit to take care of you and explore your needs. It doesn’t work if he asks for a break because he wants to hump every woman in Manhattan. However, if he needs to work on his career or is stressed due to family issues or school, space can help. Once that drama is over he can focus on your love again. But only if that’s what you want, and if you’re still available.
Now, does making up work? By the looks of these celebrity couples who have broken up and made up, yes, it can. Check out the top five celebrity couples who have a great relationship the second time around.
Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult
In September's Vogue issue, Jennifer Lawrence discusses how she accepted her then break up with Nicholas Hoult. "I wake up earlier in the morning when I have new sponges. That counter doesn't even see it coming. [Hoult] would never wring them out. We were in the kitchen once, and I picked up the sponge, and it was soapy and wet, and I was like, "See? These are the kinds of things that make me think we were never going to work." Well, they made it work after all. The couple was recently seen together and are indeed on-again.
