For years, I thought I was on track in relationships and that I made decisions like a mature mujer. It turns out I was just as lost and loopy as a 13-year-old girl. This was mostly because I didn’t have any examples of healthy, adult romantic relationships. Mami and Papi divorced when I was 2 years old. And though they continued their love affair after papers were signed, sealed, and delivered, they didn’t know how to love with maturity, patience, understanding, and most of all, respect and trust.
So, what does a healthy, adult relationship look like? What are the essentials? Here are the signs that you are in a healthy, adult romantic relationship:
Ability to Be Your Authentic Self
Being yourself with a partner is a sure sign that your relationship is healthy. You can laugh. You can cry. You can vent. You can even take off your makeup and feel beautiful. That’s because you know he loves you for you. There is no need to walk on eggshells or pretend to be someone you are not. When we are in a healthy and adult romantic relationship, we can let our guard down and be our authentic selves.
Willingness to Work Through It
A true testament of an adult relationship is work. How much work you put in. How much work he puts in. How you refuse to give up. We can stumble in our relationships and not break. So, if you have one argument and that’s the end of the relationship, good riddance! One argument, disagreement, or disappointment should not and will not break a relationship that is healthy, loving, and mature.
Accepting Your Partner
Many women go into relationships with love in their hearts and a master plan in their heads. We see potential and want to develop it. We hate the way he dresses and want to change it. We know he has certain habits that drive us crazy but still say, “I can break him out of it.” This mentality is not of a woman who accepts their love as is. When you are in a healthy and adult romantic relationship, you simply accept the person as they are. That includes their flaws. That’s not to say you shouldn’t want the person to grow. Yes, he should become better, as should you. Still, who he is as his core must not only be accepted buy also embraced.
Move forward in your relationships with these points in mind. Always remember that communication, respect, trust and love will keep you on track to loving like a mature mujer.
